Description
Glass eyes, bone teeth, a removable crown, and a body carved from rosewood with a flowing tail and expressive face, this early 1900s dragon incense burner is an antique of genuine craft and character, as much sculpture as functional object.
Hand-carved in rosewood in the early 1900s, this dragon incense burner features glass eyes set into the carved face, bone teeth, and a removable crown detail that reveals the incense burner cavity within. The flowing tail, the richly grained rosewood body, and the expressive facial carving combine to create a piece of considerable sculptural quality. Rosewood carving of this type was produced in China and across Southeast Asia for both the domestic and export markets in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and pieces with this level of material and craft detail, particularly the combination of glass eyes and bone teeth, represent the higher end of the genre. The warm rosewood grain, visible through the carved surface, adds a natural beauty to the piece.
