Description

A raised hexagonal centre and scalloped corners identify this piece as a teapot stand rather than a serving plate. Orange fruit and leaves cross cobalt-blue panels, with gilt edging bringing definition to its Victorian Imari-style decoration. Its purpose makes it a particularly apt addition to a display of tea and coffee table pieces.

The photographed brown-glazed underside carries small incised strokes but no legible Davenport factory backstamp. The existing identification attributes the stand to Davenport of Longport by comparison with a documented teapot and stand, circa 1880. That comparison may support the attribution, but the actual photographed marks do not conclusively identify its maker. The date likewise remains approximate rather than inscribed on the object. Its raised centre suggests where a teapot would have stood, while the edge and corner shape set it apart from a general side plate. The selectable variant grades the stand Good and reports no chips or cracks. This supplied condition description cannot be fully confirmed from photographs, particularly for glaze crazing or restoration. For more context on the decoration and identification, see the Journal guide to marks and backstamps.
