Description

At 27 cm across, this Aynsley Pembroke fine bone china charger plate is the largest plate form in the Pembroke range and the one that gives the pattern's bird motif, colourful floral sprays, and delicate gilt border the most generous ground on which to be seen, the scale of the piece allowing the decoration to breathe in a way that the smaller dinner and soup plates cannot quite achieve.

Made by Aynsley China of Stoke-on-Trent, this charger plate is part of the Pembroke tableware range, one of the house's most enduring and widely collected patterns. The charger plate, a large flat plate used as a decorative underplate or display piece rather than for direct food service, is among the most sought-after forms for collectors of English bone china tableware, and in the Pembroke pattern, with its vivid bird motif, hand-painted floral sprays in rich colours, and delicate gilt border, it makes a particularly striking display object. The luminosity of the Aynsley bone china body gives the hand-painted decoration a depth and brightness that rewards display in good light. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
