Description
At 17 cm tall and 9 cm wide, this Belleek basket weave vase with its green shamrock decoration, soft cream lustre finish, and gracefully fluted neck has the refined elegance that the fluted neck detail adds to an already accomplished piece, the gentle fluting of the upper section giving the vase a formal distinction that the straight-necked version of the same form cannot quite achieve.
Made at the Belleek Pottery in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and dated to circa 1997 to 1999 by its mark, this vase combines the house's signature basket weave moulding with green shamrock decoration and the additional refinement of a fluted neck, all finished in the soft cream lustre that defines Belleek at its most characteristic. The Belleek Pottery, founded in 1857, has been producing its distinctive basket weave wares since the 1860s, and the combination of the basket weave form with shamrock decoration in the cream lustre finish is one of the most enduringly popular and widely collected of all Belleek designs. The fluted neck, which distinguishes this vase from the standard basket weave vase form, adds a note of formal elegance that suits the refinement of the Belleek tradition, the gentle fluting catching the light and adding a textural dimension to the upper section of the piece. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
