Description
At 24.5 cm tall and 22 cm wide, this Carlton Ware yellow floral ceramic plate, shaped as a large yellow flower with green leaf accents and a raised central motif, has the bold decorative confidence and cheerful colour that characterise Carlton Ware's naturalistic moulded wares at their most appealing, the petal form giving the piece a sculptural quality that a flat plate could not achieve.
Made by Carlton Ware of Stoke-on-Trent, one of England's most inventive and widely collected mid-century pottery manufacturers, this plate is an example of the moulded naturalistic wares for which Carlton Ware became celebrated in the mid-20th century. Carlton Ware, which operated from 1890 until the late 20th century, was known for its willingness to work in bold colours and inventive forms, and its range of moulded leaf, flower, and fruit-shaped plates, dishes, and serving pieces, produced from the 1930s onwards, are among the most sought-after of all Carlton Ware collectibles. The yellow flower form, with its moulded petal shape and green leaf accents, is rendered with the quality of moulding and the richness of colour that distinguish the better Carlton Ware pieces, and the raised central motif gives the piece a focal point that draws the eye. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
