Description

Blue and white figural landscape plates in the Chinese export tradition occupy a distinct collecting category from famille rose ware, and this example presents the subject with figures beneath a tree, a hanging lantern form, rocky landscape details and a blue ornamental border in the restrained, monochrome palette that defines the style.

The reverse carries a four-character Chenghua Nian Zhi style mark, which should be understood as later decorative export wording rather than evidence of Ming dynasty Chenghua period porcelain. The decoration may be associated with mid to late 20th century Hong Kong or Macau-style decorated export ware, but without a specific origin stamp the safest catalogue wording remains Chinese export porcelain. This plate is also listed in the Blues and Whites collection alongside related blue and white decorative ceramics. See also the related Chinese export famille rose plates in the Oriental collection.
