Description

The cockerel is one of the more animated subjects in the Chinese export famille rose repertoire, and this plate uses it to full decorative effect. Cockerel motifs, flowering branches, birds, insects and colourful border panels combine across the surface in the layered, energetic style characteristic of mid 20th century Hong Kong or Macau-style export porcelain produced for the international decorative market.

The reverse carries a four-character Qianlong Nian Zhi style mark, which should be understood as later decorative export wording rather than evidence of an 18th century Qianlong period object. Without a specific origin stamp the safest catalogue wording remains Chinese export porcelain, though the decoration is consistent with mid 20th century Hong Kong or Macau-style export ware. Collectors of Chinese export famille rose decorative plates will find the cockerel and insect detail a lively and displayable combination.
