Description

At 5 cm tall and 10 cm wide, this Chinese-style celadon glazed ceramic covered bowl with its white crane motifs drifting across the soft green surface and apocryphal blue seal mark to the base has the calm, contemplative quality of the best East Asian decorative ceramics, the celadon glaze providing an ideal ground for the white crane motifs that drift across the surface with the elegance and restraint of the finest Chinese decorative painting.

Made in the late 20th century in the Chinese decorative tradition, this covered bowl belongs to the long tradition of celadon glazed ceramics that has its origins in the kilns of Song dynasty China. The celadon glaze, produced by firing iron-bearing clay bodies in a reduction atmosphere to produce the characteristic soft green colour, has been prized in China, Korea, Japan, and throughout the world for its subtle beauty. The white crane motifs, applied with precision and delicacy, add a note of symbolic richness to the piece, the crane being one of the most auspicious and widely used motifs in East Asian decorative art. The apocryphal blue seal mark to the base adds a layer of scholarly interest for the collector. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
