Description

Glazed in a vivid turquoise that catches the light from every angle, this Chinese porcelain Foo Dog stands with the alert, wide-eyed authority of a guardian figure, its raised scrollwork and boldly painted facial features giving it a presence well beyond its 14 cm height.

Foo Dogs, or guardian lions, have been produced in Chinese ceramics for centuries, traditionally placed in pairs at the entrances of temples, palaces, and homes to ward off negative energy and protect the occupants. The turquoise glaze used here draws on a long tradition of Chinese monochrome and coloured glazes, with turquoise being associated with the Qing dynasty period and later export production. This example is modelled with characteristic raised scrollwork detail across the body and base, and retains its bold painted facial features. It is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or restoration noted.
