Description
An English ceramic charger plate by Churchill, decorated in the traditional Blue Willow pattern with the classic landscape of pagodas, a bridge, trees, a boat, and birds in cobalt blue on a white ground, framed by detailed geometric and floral borders. The charger plate form — the largest plate in the Churchill Blue Willow range — gives the Blue Willow landscape its fullest expression, and the piece is equally suited to use as a decorative underplate or as a display piece in its own right.
Churchill China, based in Stoke-on-Trent, is one of England's most enduring transferware manufacturers, and their Blue Willow range is among the most consistently produced versions of the pattern in modern English ceramics. The printed backstamp reads "Churchill", "Made in England", "Est 1795", and "Microwave & Dishwasher Safe", indicating relatively modern production.
