Description

At 11 cm tall and 10 cm wide, this Churchill Blue Willow tall ceramic tea mug with its oval handle and full Blue Willow landscape transfer is a well-proportioned and generously sized mug that wears the classic pattern with quiet confidence, the tall form giving the cobalt blue Willow landscape the vertical space to be seen at its most complete and satisfying.

Made by Churchill China of Stoke-on-Trent, one of England's most enduring transferware manufacturers, this tall tea mug is part of the Blue Willow range, Churchill's version of the Blue Willow pattern that has been one of the most enduringly popular and widely produced patterns in English transferware since its introduction in the late 18th century. The tall mug form, which is larger and more generous than the traditional tea cup, suits the Blue Willow pattern particularly well, the full landscape of willow trees, pagodas, bridges, and birds having the space to be rendered with the completeness and detail that the pattern deserves. The oval handle, which gives the mug a formal elegance that the more common round handle cannot achieve, is a considered detail that distinguishes this mug from the more standard Churchill Blue Willow mug form. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
