Description

At 31.5 cm wide and raised on three feet, this Dykor studio pottery plate has the scale and sculptural presence of a display object rather than a functional one, and the matte dark ground with its softly coloured abstract biomorphic motifs in pastel pink, yellow, blue, and white gives it a bold mid-century decorative character that commands attention.

Made by Dykor of South Africa in the 20th century, this studio pottery plate features a matte dark ground with hand-painted abstract biomorphic motifs in pastel tones, raised on three feet that elevate the piece and give it a sculptural quality suited to wall display or shelf presentation. The Dykor mark is present to the base. Dykor was a South African studio pottery producer whose work drew on the mid-century modernist aesthetic, and pieces of this scale and decorative ambition are among the more striking examples of the South African studio pottery tradition. The abstract biomorphic motifs, with their organic forms and pastel palette, are characteristic of the mid-century design vocabulary.
