Description
Franz Welz of Klostergrab, Bohemia, was one of the most technically adventurous glasshouses of the late 19th century, and this honeycomb splatter pitcher, with its vivid four-colour spatter pattern and precisely moulded body, is a strong example of the firm's decorative output at its most confident.
Made by Franz Welz circa 1890s, this pitcher features a rounded honeycomb-moulded body with an elongated neck and a clear applied handle. The splatter pattern, in red, yellow, green, and white, is distributed across the moulded surface with the controlled irregularity that characterises the finest Welz splatter work. The honeycomb mould adds a secondary layer of texture that interacts with the colour pattern to produce a richly decorative surface. Franz Welz pieces from this period are documented in specialist Bohemian glass references and are actively collected by European art glass enthusiasts.
