Description
The red 華利廠造 mark on the reverse of this plate is one of the more specific factory attributions found on mid-century Hong Kong export porcelain. Read as Hua Li Chang Zao, meaning made by Hua Li Factory, it identifies the Wah Lee / Hua Li Factory on Peng Chau Island, Hong Kong, active during the mid 20th century and known for producing famille rose and Rose Medallion style decorative wares for the export market.
The plate is decorated in famille rose and Rose Medallion style with figural cartouches, floral panels, pink and green enamel colours, a central bird-and-floral medallion and gilt-toned border detail. The combination of figural cartouches and floral panels is characteristic of the Rose Medallion tradition, here interpreted in a Hong Kong factory context rather than as a Guangzhou or Canton export attribution. Collectors of mid-century Hong Kong factory porcelain and Chinese export decorative ware will find this a well-documented and displayable example.
