Description
Murano glassmakers of the mid-20th century brought a particular theatrical confidence to their decorative objects, and this double candlestick, with its sculptural dolphin supports, ribbed flower-form candle cups, and warm gold leaf inclusions, is a fine example of that tradition at its most inventive.
Made in Murano, Venice, in the 1940s to 1950s, this double candlestick features a clear glass base with twin arms supported by stylised dolphin figures, each arm terminating in a ribbed flower-form candle cup. The soft gold leaf inclusions distributed through the glass body add warmth and a characteristic Murano luxury to the piece. The dolphin was a recurring motif in Venetian decorative arts, associated with the sea-faring identity of the city, and its use here gives the candlestick a distinctly Venetian character. Mid-century Murano glass of this quality and decorative complexity is increasingly collected internationally. Browse related pieces in our Art Glass collection.
