Description
Jean Gerbino was one of the most distinctive voices in the Vallauris ceramic tradition, and his mosaic technique, in which fragments of differently coloured clay are assembled and worked into a unified surface, produces results that are immediately recognisable and unlike anything else in mid-century French studio pottery.
Made by Jean Gerbino in Vallauris, France, in the 1950s and signed to the base, this small vase demonstrates the mosaic technique at its most refined: marbled geometric panels of contrasting clay tones cover the body, with a band of soft turquoise floral motifs providing a decorative accent that lifts the piece. Vallauris, in the south of France, became one of the most important centres of studio ceramics in the post-war period, attracting artists including Picasso, and Gerbino's work from this period is now firmly established in the international collector market. Signed Gerbino pieces are documented and traceable. Browse related pieces in our Ceramic Vases collection.
