Description
A classic blue-and-white ceramic side plate by Johnson Brothers, decorated in the traditional Willow pattern with the familiar landscape of pagodas, a bridge, trees, boats, and birds rendered in rich cobalt blue on a white ground. The plate is a well-proportioned example of the enduring Willow pattern in everyday English tableware, and its modest scale makes it equally suited to display and use.
Johnson Brothers, founded in Hanley, Staffordshire in 1883, became one of England's most prolific producers of transferware tableware, and their Willow pattern pieces are among the most widely collected examples of the design. The printed backstamp reads "Johnson Brothers Made in England", "Genuine Hand Engraving", and "Willow", and also states that the plate is dishwasher and microwave safe, placing production in the later 20th century.
