Description
The reticulated openwork panels of this Locke and Co Worcester pot-pourri pedestal bowl, set against a soft blush ivory ground with raised floral decoration and gilt accenting, represent one of the most technically demanding forms of English porcelain decoration, each pierced section cut by hand through the unfired clay body with a precision that leaves no margin for error.
Made by Locke and Co Ltd of Worcester, England, circa 1902 to 1914, this pot-pourri pedestal bowl is a product of one of the most distinguished periods in Worcester porcelain history. Edward Locke established his independent Worcester factory in 1895 after leaving the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company, and the firm produced fine decorative porcelain of considerable quality until its closure in 1914. The blush ivory ground, a soft warm tone characteristic of the late Victorian and Edwardian Worcester palette, provides the backdrop for the reticulated openwork panels, which allow air to circulate through the bowl in the manner of a traditional pot-pourri vessel. The raised floral decoration, applied in relief to the body of the piece, and the gilt accenting to the rim and foot give the bowl a refinement that is characteristic of Locke and Co at its best. The Locke and Co mark is present to the base. The piece is in good condition throughout.
