Description

A multicoloured duck stands in front of the curved log on this Lucia Ware planter. Its dark green head, white neck band, orange bill and blue wing accents contrast with the green and brown bark-textured body. The long planting opening follows the curve behind the bird.

Lucia Ware is the supplied maker identification for this South African ceramic piece, associated with Boksburg East Potteries. The supplied dating places it broadly in the mid 20th century, around 1945 and the 1950s, rather than establishing an exact year of manufacture. The base photographs clearly show LUCIA 5801. Remnants of a worn paper label remain on one end of the planter. Related forms and makers appear in the South African Ceramics collection.

  • Maker: Lucia Ware; South Africa, following the supplied identification
  • Dimensions: 8.5 cm (height) × 28 cm (width)
  • Condition: Excellent, as supplied. No chips or cracks. The paper label is worn and incomplete. The photographs form part of the condition description.
  • Features: Curved ceramic log, moulded bark and knots, multicoloured duck, elongated planting opening and paper label remnants
