Description
A notched prow and sharply upturned stern give this Lucia Ware gondola planter its recognisable boat-shaped silhouette. The long, low hull surrounds a central planting compartment, with moulded lines accentuating the raised ends. Variegated green glaze covers the exterior and the recessed interior.
Lucia Ware is the supplied maker identification for this South African ceramic piece, associated with Boksburg East Potteries. The supplied dating places it broadly in the mid 20th century, around 1945 and the 1950s, rather than establishing an exact year of manufacture. The photographed underside shows the LUCIA name and model number 6008. Related forms and makers appear in the South African Ceramics collection.
