Description
Playful, colourful and unmistakably South African, this Lucia Ware fish planter is a joyful example of mid-century ceramic design at its most characterful, and one of the most eye-catching novelty forms from the Lucia Ware range.
Produced by Lucia Ware, one of South Africa's most recognisable mid-century ceramic manufacturers, this style 2202 planter vase is modelled in a stylised fish form and hand-painted in yellow, blue, brown and black over a glossy cream ground. The open-top form makes it equally suited to use as a small planter, decorative vase or display piece within a curated vintage ceramic collection. Lucia Ware produced a wide range of decorative domestic ceramics throughout the 20th century, and their animal and novelty forms are among the most collectible items from the manufacturer's output. The style 2202 fish planter is a particularly sought-after form, and examples in good condition with strong hand-painted decoration are increasingly difficult to find. This example is in visible condition as shown in the images.
