Mdina Small Hand-Blown Art Glass Seahorse Sculpture

At 14 cm tall and 6 cm wide, this Mdina hand-blown art glass seahorse sculpture, with its clear shaped form rising from a speckled base of yellow, blue, and dark tones, has the warmth and individuality that only hand-blown glass can achieve, the seahorse form giving the piece a naturalistic character that distinguishes it from the more abstract decorative glass objects in the Mdina range.

Made by Mdina Glass of Malta, the studio founded in 1968 by the British glass artist Michael Harris, this seahorse sculpture is an example of the hand-blown art glass for which Mdina has become celebrated since its establishment. Michael Harris, who had previously worked at the Royal College of Art and at Whitefriars Glass in England, founded Mdina Glass with the intention of creating a studio that would draw on the long tradition of Maltese glassmaking while developing a distinctive contemporary aesthetic, and the studio's hand-blown glass objects, with their characteristic use of warm earth tones, speckled surfaces, and naturalistic forms, quickly became among the most sought-after of all Mediterranean art glass collectibles. The seahorse form, which is one of the most enduring subjects in the Mdina range, is rendered with the fluid, organic quality that hand-blown glass allows, the clear shaped body of the seahorse rising from the speckled base of yellow, blue, and dark tones with a naturalism and delicacy that rewards close examination.
