Description

The spatter technique, in which fragments of coloured glass are rolled into the molten gather before blowing, produces results that are never quite the same twice, and this ruffled vase, with its layered tones of deep red, blue, amber, and smoky glass, is a particularly vivid example of the form.

Hand-blown in the 20th century, this art glass vase features a flared body rising from a raised foot, with a softly waved ruffled rim that gives the piece a lively sculptural energy. The multicoloured spatter pattern runs throughout the body, the colours distributed unevenly in the way that is characteristic of the technique, making this a one-of-a-kind object. Spatter glass of this type was produced across Europe and America throughout the late 19th and 20th centuries, with the finest examples valued for the richness and complexity of their colour distribution.
