Description

Harrach of Bohemia was one of the great European glasshouses of the 19th century, and their Moroccan Ware enamelled pieces, with their richly layered hand-painted decoration in turquoise, yellow, pink, and black, represent some of the most visually complex decorative glass produced in the Victorian period.

This matched pair of late 19th-century Harrach vases features rounded bodies with slender necks, each decorated with intricate hand-painted and enamelled panels in the Moroccan Ware style: geometric borders, stylised floral motifs, and richly coloured grounds that draw on the Orientalist aesthetic that was fashionable across European decorative arts in the second half of the 19th century. The enamelling is applied with considerable precision, and the colour palette, combining turquoise, yellow, pink, and black, is characteristic of the Harrach Moroccan Ware range. Matched pairs in this condition are uncommon.
