Description
At 20.5 cm tall, this pair of vintage glass tree stump vases in deep amethyst with soft cased white interior detail and clear sculptural bases has the kind of colour depth and formal inventiveness that makes decorative glass of this type so compelling to collect, the rich purple of the outer glass shifting in tone as the light changes and the tree stump form giving each vase a naturalistic character that is unusual in 20th-century decorative glassware.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this pair of tree stump vases is an example of the decorative glass tradition in which natural forms, here the cross-section of a tree trunk with its suggestion of bark and growth rings, are translated into glass with a combination of technical skill and decorative imagination. The casing technique, in which a layer of white glass is applied to the interior of the amethyst outer body, creates a colour contrast that gives the vases a visual depth beyond what a single-colour piece could achieve. The clear sculptural bases, moulded to suggest the root structure of the tree, complete the naturalistic conceit with a confidence that speaks to the quality of the original design. The two vases are well matched in colour and form. Both pieces are in very good condition throughout.
