Description
At 27 cm wide and 6 cm deep, this Portmeirion Botanic Garden bowl with its clean white centre and signature green leaf border is one of the more restrained and versatile pieces in the Botanic Garden range, the absence of the pattern's more elaborate botanical illustration giving the green leaf border the space to be seen as a decorative element in its own right, the result a piece of considerable elegance and practical versatility.
Made by Portmeirion Pottery of Stoke-on-Trent, the Botanic Garden pattern, designed by Susan Williams-Ellis and introduced in 1972, has become one of the most enduringly popular and widely collected British ceramic patterns of the late 20th century. The pattern, which features detailed botanical illustrations of flowers, herbs, and plants drawn from a Victorian botanical reference book, is produced across a wide range of tableware and serving forms, and this bowl, with its plain white centre and green leaf border, represents the pattern at its most restrained and versatile. The generous size of the bowl, at 27 cm wide, makes it suitable for use as a serving bowl, a salad bowl, or a display piece, and the quality of the Portmeirion earthenware body and glaze is consistently high. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
