Description

At 10 cm tall and 10.5 cm wide, this Portmeirion British Heritage Collection Parian ware creamer with its raised Gothic cathedral-inspired architectural detail and figural relief has the refined, scholarly character of a piece designed to celebrate the heritage of English architecture and craftsmanship, the soft Parian-style finish giving the embossed decoration a clarity and delicacy that a glazed surface could not achieve.

Made by Portmeirion Pottery of Stoke-on-Trent and dating to circa the 1980s, this creamer is part of the British Heritage Collection, a range produced by Portmeirion that drew on the architectural and decorative heritage of Britain as a source of decorative motifs. The Parian-style finish, which gives the piece a smooth, slightly translucent white surface reminiscent of the Parian ware produced by English potteries in the Victorian period, provides an ideal ground for the raised Gothic cathedral-inspired architectural detail and figural relief, the embossed decoration standing out from the surface with the crispness and precision that the material allows. The creamer form, with its pouring spout and handle, gives the piece a practical function alongside its decorative qualities. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
