Description
Compact in scale but commanding in presence, this Spode vase carries the Blue Italian pattern across its white porcelain body with the precision and depth of colour that has made this design one of the most enduring in British ceramic history.
Spode, founded in Stoke-on-Trent in 1770 by Josiah Spode, is credited with perfecting the formula for bone china and with standardising the blue transfer-printing process that would define English ceramics for generations. The Blue Italian pattern, introduced around 1816, draws on Italian landscape imagery filtered through the English chinoiserie tradition, depicting a classical ruin, bridge, and foliage in rich cobalt on a clean white ground. It has remained in continuous production ever since, making it one of the longest-running patterns in ceramic history. This vase carries the Spode backstamp confirming its authenticity. Condition is excellent, with no chips, cracks, or wear to the decoration.
