Description
At 17 cm wide and 10 cm tall, this vintage art glass bowl in clear glass with delicate white filigree-style detailing and applied brown amber glass accents has the kind of decorative complexity that rewards close examination, the filigree work creating a lace-like pattern within the body of the glass while the applied amber elements add a warm colour contrast to the clear ground.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this bowl is an example of the decorative art glass tradition in which multiple glassworking techniques are combined in a single piece to create a surface of considerable visual richness. The filigree technique, in which fine threads of white glass are embedded within the clear body of the piece to create a delicate lattice-like pattern, is one of the oldest and most demanding techniques in the glassmaker's repertoire, with roots in the Venetian latticino tradition of the 16th century. The applied amber glass elements, added to the exterior of the bowl as decorative accents, provide a warm colour note that complements the white filigree and gives the piece a three-dimensional quality that purely flat decoration cannot achieve. The rounded bowl form, with its gently curved body and open rim, gives the decoration maximum visibility from above. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
