Description
Cherubs, floral scrollwork and a crisp blue-and-white palette decorate this octagonal porcelain trinket box, its Portuguese-style decoration and well-finished lidded form making it a versatile and attractive piece for the collector of European decorative ceramics.
Blue-and-white porcelain with cherub and floral decoration in the Portuguese style draws on a long tradition of European tin-glazed earthenware and porcelain production, from the Delftware of the Netherlands to the azulejo tiles of Portugal and the faience of France and Italy. Pieces of this type were produced in large quantities during the late 20th century for the decorative and gift market, with quality ranging from mass-produced to finely hand-painted examples. This piece shows good quality decoration with a well-finished octagonal rectangular form and richly detailed cherub, floral and scrollwork motifs. It works equally well as a jewellery box, a display object, or within a curated collection of blue-and-white porcelain. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks, or damage to the lid or body noted.
