Description
At 21 cm tall, this Burleigh Ware cream and red ceramic jug has the warm, confident character that defines the best of mid-century English pottery, the soft cream glaze with its red interior, stylised curved handle, and small red accent motif to the body combining to produce a piece that is both functional in form and decorative in effect.
Made by Burgess and Leigh of Burslem, Staffordshire, one of England's most enduring potteries, this jug is an example of the decorative earthenware that the company produced alongside its more widely known blue and white transfer-printed ranges. Burgess and Leigh, trading as Burleigh Ware, has been producing pottery in Burslem since 1851, and its mid-century decorative ranges, of which this jug is an example, show the company's willingness to work in the bolder colour combinations and more expressive forms of the post-war period. The cream glaze with red interior is a colour combination that appears across several Burleigh Ware ranges of the mid-20th century, and the stylised curved handle and red accent motif to the body give this jug a decorative character that distinguishes it from purely functional pottery of the same period. The piece is in good condition throughout.
