Description
At 15.5 cm tall, this cobalt blue glass bud vase with gilt accents and hand-painted floral decoration has the refined decorative character of European art glass at its most considered, the deep, saturated blue of the glass providing a rich ground against which the gilt accents and hand-painted flowers read with a clarity and warmth that simpler decoration could not achieve.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this bud vase belongs to the tradition of decorated European glass in which colour, gilding, and hand-painted ornament are combined to produce pieces of considerable decorative richness from relatively modest forms. The cobalt blue glass, one of the most enduring and widely used colours in European decorative glass, gives the piece its primary visual impact, the depth and intensity of the colour varying with the thickness of the glass and the angle of the light. The gilt accents, applied to the rim and body of the vase, add a note of formal elegance that connects the piece to the long tradition of gilded European glass, while the hand-painted floral decoration, rendered in colours that complement the blue ground, gives the piece a personal, artisanal quality that distinguishes it from purely industrial glass production. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
