Description

A vivid peacock spreads its tail across the lid of this Japanese ceramic trinket box, its rich plumage set against a dark ground and framed by a bright yellow border, the whole piece a compact and colourful example of Japanese decorative porcelain at its most eye-catching.

Japanese decorative ceramics with peacock and exotic bird motifs have a long history, drawing on both traditional Japanese artistic conventions and the influence of European chinoiserie and Japonisme that shaped decorative arts in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Lidded trinket boxes of this type were produced in Japan in large quantities during the late 20th century for the export market, with quality ranging from mass-produced to finely hand-painted examples. This piece shows good quality hand-painted decoration with gilt-style detailing and a well-finished lidded form. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks, or damage to the lid or body noted.
