Description
At 26 cm tall, this vintage purple and white cased glass bud vase with its finely detailed Nicobar parakeet motif has the same elegant fluted form and richness of colour as its companion piece, the bird rendered among branches with a naturalism that gives the vase a decorative character well beyond the purely ornamental, the deep purple glass providing a striking backdrop for the green and red tones of the parakeet.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this bud vase is a companion piece to the yellow-bellied sapsucker vase (CBD-0145), the two sharing the same form, colour, and decorative approach while featuring different bird subjects. The Nicobar parakeet, a species native to the Nicobar Islands in the Indian Ocean, is rendered here with the kind of detailed naturalism that suggests the maker was working from ornithological reference material, the bird's distinctive plumage captured with care against the white cased interior of the vase. The casing technique, in which a layer of white glass is applied to the interior of the purple outer body, gives the vase a depth and opacity that enhances the decorative effect of the bird motif. The fluted form, with its gently ridged body tapering to a narrow neck, gives the piece a classical elegance suited to both the bird decoration and the rich colour of the glass. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
