Description
At 16 cm tall and 19 cm wide, this vintage solid brass triple hanging doorbell with its ornate wall mount, three suspended bells, and raised leaf detailing has the warm patina and confident craftsmanship of decorative brassware made to last, the three bells producing a layered, resonant tone when struck that is quite different from the single note of a conventional doorbell.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this triple doorbell belongs to the tradition of decorative entrance hardware that flourished in the Victorian and Edwardian periods, when the front door of a well-appointed house was furnished with brassware of considerable quality and ornament. The triple bell form, in which three bells of slightly different sizes are suspended from a shared ornate wall mount, produces a chord rather than a single note when the bells are set in motion, and the decorative quality of the mount, with its raised leaf detailing, gives the piece a visual richness that suits its role as the first decorative object encountered by a visitor to the house. The solid brass construction, which gives the piece its weight and its warm golden tone, develops a patina with age that adds to the character of the object. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
