Description
Black jasperware with terra cotta relief is one of Wedgwood's most dramatic colour combinations, and the Egyptian Revival subject matter here gives this planter a sculptural presence that sets it well apart from the more familiar blue and white jasperware pieces.
Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this small planter features a matte black jasperware ground with raised terra cotta Egyptian-style relief figures applied to the body. The Egyptian Revival was a recurring influence in English decorative arts, particularly following Napoleon's Egyptian campaign of 1798 and the subsequent wave of Egyptomania that swept through European design. Wedgwood drew on this vocabulary with characteristic precision, translating hieroglyphic-adjacent imagery and Egyptian figural forms into the refined language of jasperware relief. The compact square form with slightly flared rim makes it as suited to display as to its original function.
