Description

William Adams and Sons produced jasperware in direct competition with Wedgwood throughout the 19th century, and this cobalt blue vase with white neoclassical relief is a fine example of the Staffordshire tradition at its most accomplished.

Made by William Adams and Sons of Stoke-on-Trent, this small vase features a deep cobalt blue jasperware ground with finely applied white relief decoration: classical figures, foliate borders, and neoclassical motifs that demonstrate the high standard of relief work Adams achieved during the 19th century. William Adams and Sons were one of the most respected of the Staffordshire potteries to work in the jasperware tradition, and pieces bearing their mark are increasingly sought after by collectors who look beyond Wedgwood to the broader English jasperware canon. The compact ovoid form with slightly flared neck makes this a refined cabinet piece. Browse related pieces in our Ceramics collection.
