Description

Warm ochre, cobalt blue, and earthy green meet in the hand-painted surface of this Zuid-Holland Gouda vase, its France pattern wrapping the form in a layered composition of birds, stylised flowers, and scrolling foliage that is immediately recognisable to collectors of Dutch art pottery.

Zuid-Holland, based in Gouda in the Netherlands, was one of the leading producers of the distinctive hand-painted earthenware that became internationally associated with the Gouda region from the late 19th century through the mid-20th century. The France pattern is a named design within the Zuid-Holland range, characterised by its naturalistic bird and floral motifs rendered in a warm, earthy palette on a pale cream ground. Each piece was hand-painted by skilled decorators, meaning no two examples are identical. The base carries the Zuid-Holland mark along with the pattern name and model number 284X, providing clear attribution. Condition is good, with minor age-related wear consistent with use; no chips or cracks noted.
