The textured glass base, with its moulded surface catching the light with a quiet brilliance, supports a green majolica-glazed ceramic cover of the type used in quality European oil lamps of the late Victorian period, the rich green glaze giving the piece a depth of colour that distinguishes it from the plain brass or clear glass lamps of the same era. The brass burner assembly is fitted with a Kosmos Matador draft tube and flame spreader, with a working mechanism and wick intact. The Kosmos Matador burner, a German-made precision burner produced from the late 19th century, was widely regarded as among the finest kerosene burners of its era, and its presence on this lamp is an indicator of the quality of the original piece.
