Description

Raised scrollwork, a pedestal foot and a foliate handle give this floral cup and saucer its Rococo Revival character. Purple, pink, yellow and orange blossoms interrupt the white porcelain, while gilding follows the moulded shapes. The matching pair brings Continental detail to a display of tea and coffee table pieces.

Both pieces are recorded with a green printed eagle and C.T. initials, a mark associated with Carl Tielsch & Co. of Altwasser in Silesia. Altwasser was then within Germany and is now part of Wałbrzych in Poland. The mark supports the maker identification more directly than floral style alone. Its precise manufacture year is not stated on the pieces, so the late nineteenth or early twentieth century is a period attribution based on the mark form and decoration. The existing listing describes Excellent condition and reports no chips or cracks. Its ornate handle, foot and moulded detail deserve careful physical inspection, since photographs cannot exclude every fine line or previous repair. For more context on the decoration and identification, see the Journal guide to collecting vintage ceramics.
