Description
Held in the soft frosted lavender that only neodymium glass can produce, this small Murano figurine of a girl at prayer has a stillness to it that is rare in decorative glass, the clasped hands and bowed posture rendered with a delicacy that speaks to the skill of the Cesare Toso workshop.
Cesare Toso is a historic Murano glasshouse with roots in the Venetian glass tradition, known for producing figurative and decorative pieces of high technical quality. Neodymium glass, which shifts in colour from soft lavender to a warmer pinkish tone depending on the light source, is a specialist material that requires precise control during the lampworking or mould-blowing process. Figurines of this type were produced for the European and export markets from the mid-20th century onwards and are collected both for their material quality and their subject matter. This example is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs noted.
