Description
Rich cobalt blue sweeps across the interior of this Portuguese ceramic bowl in a composition of bird, floral sprays, and scrolling foliage that is immediately recognisable as the Coimbra tradition, its hand-painted surface carrying the confident brushwork of a maker well-versed in this regional style.
Conimbriga is a Portuguese ceramics producer whose name references the ancient Roman settlement near Coimbra, a city in central Portugal with a long tradition of blue-and-white painted earthenware. The Coimbra style is characterised by its bold, free-hand cobalt decoration on a white or cream ground, drawing on both Moorish and Chinese ceramic influences that filtered into Portuguese pottery from the 16th century onwards. Each piece is hand-painted, meaning the decoration varies slightly between examples. This bowl carries the Conimbriga mark to the base, confirming its attribution. Condition is very good, with no chips, cracks, or restoration noted.
