Description
A high angular handle and projecting lip frame the blue pastoral landscape on this small Copeland Spode Italian cream jug.
Made in England, the jug carries the Italian pattern, introduced by Spode circa 1816 and continued under Copeland ownership. The scene combines buildings, trees, water, figures and cattle, while a dense ornamental border follows the opening and extends over the handle. Decoration inside the rim continues the pattern beyond the exterior, contrasting with the otherwise white interior. The rounded body rests on a low foot and has a broad pouring lip opposite the handle. Its blue oval backstamp identifies Copeland and Spode's Italian, while the separate B over 25 marking supports a production date circa 1925. The pattern's nineteenth-century introduction therefore precedes this particular jug. The decoration relates to pieces in the Blues and Whites collection, including the Copeland Spode Italian Lidded Coffee Pot. The Journal explores the maker in Spode and Copeland: A Collector's Guide.
