Description

Radiating ribs spread from the pedestal towards the undulating rim of this green Drostdy model 156 handled bowl.

An elongated ceramic pedestal bowl with a pointed end, large loop handle and gently undulating rim. Radiating moulded ribs decorate the body, with darker green glaze pooling in the recessed lines. The interior and oval pedestal foot are finished in glossy green glaze. The underside is impressed Drostdy 156, identifying manufacture by Grahamstown Potteries in Grahamstown, South Africa. The pointed end balances a large loop handle above an oval pedestal foot. Darker green glaze collects in the recessed ribs, making the radiating pattern visible along the sides. The open interior and undulating rim are decorative features; no food-safety, drainage or watertightness guarantee is implied by the bowl-shaped form. For comparison, the Drostdy 249L Green Glazed Spouted Serving Bowl provides a related example in the store. The Journal’s South African Pottery Makers: A Collector's Guide to Local Ceramics gives further collector context.
