Description
Few South African potteries carry the historical weight of Drostdy Grahamstown, and this striking black mantel vase from circa 1950 is a fine example of their mid-century output at its most dramatic and commanding.
Produced by Drostdy Grahamstown, one of South Africa's most historically significant ceramic manufacturers, this substantial mantel vase is finished in a glossy black glaze and features a raised footed base, fluted moulded body detail and twin scroll-style handles. The bold form and rich black glaze give it a commanding presence on any mantelpiece or sideboard, and the twin scroll handles add a classical decorative flourish that speaks to the formal design sensibility of the period. Drostdy Grahamstown pieces from the circa 1950 period are increasingly sought after by collectors of South African studio and decorative pottery, and large-format examples in black are particularly scarce. This example is in visible condition as shown in the images.
