Description
Raised ends and horizontal ribs shape this glossy black Drostdy Ware model 241 boat bowl.
An elongated ceramic bowl with a boat-shaped profile, raised ends, horizontal moulded ribs and a low oval foot. Glossy black glaze covers the interior and exterior. The underside is impressed Drostdy 241, identifying manufacture by Grahamstown Potteries in Grahamstown, South Africa. The long open bowl has a low oval foot and moulded ribs that follow its boat-like outline. Both interior and exterior carry black glaze. Its recorded 241 impression allows comparison with the cream and green versions of the shape, while the model number itself does not establish a precise date. For comparison, the Drostdy 241 Green Glazed Boat-Form Planter Vase provides a related example in the store. The Journal’s South African Pottery Makers: A Collector's Guide to Local Ceramics gives further collector context.
