Description

Fine speckling and cream glaze soften the raised ends of this Drostdy Ware model 241 boat bowl.

An elongated ceramic bowl finished in glossy cream glaze, with a boat-shaped profile, raised ends, horizontal moulded ribs and a low oval foot. Fine speckling is visible within the glaze. The underside is impressed Drostdy 241, identifying manufacture by Grahamstown Potteries in Grahamstown, South Africa. The low oval foot supports an elongated open bowl with raised ends and horizontal ribs. Cream glaze covers the interior and exterior, with fine speckling visible in the finish. The recorded 241 impression connects the form with differently glazed examples, without implying that all colour versions were manufactured in the same year. For comparison, the Drostdy 241 Green Glazed Boat-Form Planter Vase provides a related example in the store. The Journal’s South African Pottery Makers: A Collector's Guide to Local Ceramics gives further collector context.
