At 15 cm tall and 18 cm wide, this Amphora pottery double-handled vase with its hand-painted floral decoration across a textured crackle-glaze ground and deep blue handles has the decorative richness and technical ambition that characterise the best of the Amphora Pottery's early 20th-century production, the combination of crackle glaze, hand-painted ornament, and contrasting handle colour producing a piece of considerable visual complexity.

Made by the Amphora Pottery of Turn-Teplitz in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic, in the early 20th century, this vase is an example of the decorative art pottery for which the Amphora works became celebrated in the years around 1900. The Amphora Pottery, founded in 1892, was one of the most prolific and inventive of the Bohemian art pottery studios, producing a wide range of decorative wares that drew on Art Nouveau, Symbolist, and naturalistic traditions and that were exported across Europe and to the United States in considerable quantities. The crackle glaze technique, in which the glaze is formulated to crack in a controlled pattern during cooling, creates a surface of considerable textural interest, and the hand-painted floral decoration, applied over the crackle ground, gives the piece a layered visual richness that rewards close examination. The deep blue handles, which contrast with the lighter ground of the body, complete the piece with a formal note. The piece is in good condition throughout.
