Description

The lidded sugar bowl is the most functionally complete piece in the Elsterwerda M65 service, and in the mottled ombré green glaze that defines the range, with its subtle tonal variation and quiet luminosity, it is also one of the most refined examples of German Art Deco ceramics in this collection.

Made by Elsterwerda of Germany, circa 1930s, this lidded sugar bowl is finished in the M65 mottled ombré green glaze with subtle tonal variation across the rounded period form. The piece is marked M65 and imprinted 777/7 to the base, confirming its place in the documented Elsterwerda production catalogue and making it a fully traceable collector's piece. Elsterwerda, based in Saxony, Germany, produced a range of Art Deco tableware in the 1930s that is now actively collected for the quality of the glaze work and the elegance of the period forms. The M65 mottled ombré green is the most celebrated of the Elsterwerda glaze ranges, and the lidded sugar bowl form, with its fitted lid and rounded body, is one of the most satisfying pieces in the service.
