Description
The side plate is the most understated piece in the Elsterwerda M65 service, and in the mottled ombré green glaze, with its delicate crystalline-style surface effect and clean circular form, it demonstrates that the quality of the glaze work is as impressive on the simplest forms as it is on the more complex lidded pieces.
Made by Elsterwerda of Germany, circa 1930s, this side plate is finished in the M65 mottled ombré green glaze with a delicate crystalline-style surface effect and a clean circular form. The plate is marked M65 and imprinted 2/38 to the base, confirming its place in the documented Elsterwerda production catalogue and making it a fully traceable collector's piece. The crystalline-style surface effect, in which the glaze produces a subtle pattern of crystal-like formations during firing, adds a secondary layer of visual interest to the mottled ombré green ground and is characteristic of the finest Elsterwerda M65 pieces. At 19 cm wide, the side plate is a versatile form that suits both display and use.
